In the dead of a humid August night in 1987, Luna works the graveyard shift at the Dusty Mile Diner on the outskirts of Yarrow, Nebraska. A stranger in a black suit sits in booth four, his hands perfectly still on the table. He orders the blue plate special—gravy, mashed potatoes, meatloaf—but doesn't eat. He just stares at the plate as the gravy cools and congeals. When Luna tries to clear it, he speaks.
