We all have ways of showing where we belong. A wedding ring signals a marriage covenant. A team jersey shows our allegiance. These are external marks that point to an internal identity. But what if the sign of belonging was costly? What if it was painful, permanent, and demanded a level of commitment that went far beyond just putting something on?
