Derik started his journey in martial arts training informally with his father in his small town in Minnesota. After studying animation during his university years in South Dakota, he moved to Los Angeles to get into the movie and tv industry. There he discovered the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts and his formal martial arts training began.
