In which the once promising concert performances of the Veronese family take a rapid descent from local acclaim to street entertainment, leaving poor Marianina in a pitiable state that draws the compassion of Barty. Meanwhile, Barty finds new acquaintance and lively distraction among a convivial Belgian set, whose spirited company temporarily lifts his spirits despite the ever-darkening shadow over his ailing eye.
