The Martyr and The Mythmaker
from Between Bread and Stone Hosted by Stephen R. Brewer, PsyD
The child in the manger captured our imagination. But the man who stood by as Stephen was stoned may have shaped our theology. In this special Feast of Saint Stephen episode, we interrogate the uneasy relationship between the church’s first martyr and its most prolific apostle. What if Paul’s gospel of grace emerged not from revelation, but from remorse? What if the Christ we follow is not the memory of Jesus of Nazareth, but the myth Paul needed to survive the guilt of Stephen’s death? Drawing on forensic analysis, historical gaps, and psychological reconstruction, The Martyr and the Mythmaker traces the line from conscience to creed. We explore Paul’s midlife transformation, the absence of contemporaneous evidence, and the possibility that early “Christian teachers” Paul opposed were agents of empire sent to derail his message of restorative love. This episode does not reject faith. It exposes the real human grief that may have birthed it. It calls into question how empires co-opt stories, how trauma becomes scripture, and how Stephen’s witness may still be echoing through every act of resistance that costs more than it returns.
