'The Matt Duffin Show' - June Holt, Mother, Advocate & Seriously Speaking

June Holt, to meet her is as inspiring as educational, if not deeply thoughtful. Appreciative. I've flirted with her pretty self, sure, but quickly turned my hat 'forward' as the subjects from her knowledge is serious, helpful, advocacyful (is that a word?) and as kind or agressive as the needs to be. June has an M.A. in Gerontology and Wellness Management from Ball State University and a B.S. in Microbiology from Purdue University.  For the past 11 years June has been a paid consultant in the field of aging and long term care services.  In 2004, her son, Joe, suffered severe brain damage caused by a rare cancerous brain tumor.  For the last nine years she has also been an active advocate for Joe and other people and families coping with brain injury.   Even though June was connected to an advocacy and support network before Joe's condition caused traumatic, life-changing disabilities for him, his family found it extremely hard and sometimes impossible to connect Joe to appropriate brain injury services and supports after he left the acute care setting.  June is in the process of retiring from the field of aging to focus entirely on bringing awareness of  the issues of brain injury to the citizens of Indiana and encouraging the state, professionals and families to rise to the challenge of offering hope to survivors and their families - hope that an effective continuum of care can be created, championed, and sustained in Indiana.  June wants to be a part of a network of  brain injury families that work together to compel our state to develop a comprehensive system of support and services focused on returning people who survive brain injury to their best new life in their communities.
