May 1998. A highway motel off Route 9 in upstate New York. Luna checks into Room 14 at the Moonrise Inn because the sign says vacancy and the rain won't let up. The mattress is too soft, the sheets smell like bleach and something underneath the bleach, and the springs remember every body that ever lay still. By midnight she learns that the couple in the photo on the nightstand didn't check out — and neither did the man who comes to the door at 2:17 AM, soaked through, asking for his wife.
