The Memoirs of Joseph Smith lll, chapter 1 continued p5-8
from Green Eyes Yolanda · host Yolanda Tranquille Geer
Joseph Smith lll recollects getting in trouble with his mum and being disciplined, also of his mum turning their house into a hospital during a time of illness of swamp fever and malaria amongst the residents. He recollects the death of his grandfather while at Commerce and that he was reprimanded for not crying but said it was because his grandfather was now in heaven without pain. He describes the people and the environment and layout of Commerce. He shares being ill around the age of 15 and having a fever but that his fever subsided after an altercation of upset towards two men who had borrowed horses and not returned them. Joseph Smith lll had a strong passion for horses. He speaks of a drunken lawyer and the lawyers son getting drunk and stealing a horse and the consequence of that being a death sentence. There is a humourous recollection of a man pretending to be deaf pretending not to hear the scolds of his wife that Joseph Smith lll shares in his Bits of memories. I note unrelated, of the people he spoke about, how many women deserted their husbands and went on to marry and leave a 2nd and 3rd husband. Intriguing.
