The Memoirs of President Joseph Smith lll p. 34-36

The Nauvoo Mansion and Porter Rockwell and General W. Doniphan dominate this episode and are all entangled. An accusation was made against Porter Rockwell, a member of the church during the life time of Joseph Smith Junior which involved accusation against Joseph Smith Junior too, an accusation of attempted assassination against Governor Boggs. General Doniphan and Joseph Smith Junior knew Porter Rockwell was innocent and helped him be aquitted and had to leave his home, so Joseph Smith Junior put him up at the Nauvoo Mansion House while Emma Smith was away to St Louis purchasing furniture and such like to furnish the new building which had been turned into a hotel. Porter Rockwell was setting up a liquor store and Joseph Smith Junior had given Porter Rockwell permission to temporarily set up his bar in the Nauvoo Mansion. Joseph Smith lll relates Emma Smith's reaction when she returned to see the sight and with calm demeanor said for the bar to go or she would move back across the street. Joseph Smith immediately addressed the matter. Joseph Smith lll said his bedroom was next to him parents and he never heard an argument or raised word and he said he knew his parents very well. Joseph Smith lll speaks of visiting General Doniphan later in life with his brother Alexander and thanking him for the support he gave his father and also for being brave in 1838 in refusing to command the shooting dead of Joseph Smith Junior and Hyrum Smith and others at that time.
