OVERVIEW: In this episode, we explore the career path of Madam Chia Yip Lan, from a Chinese Malaysian origin living and previously working as a Teacher trainer in Malaysia under the Malaysian Ministry of Education. She shares her experience as a young 24 years old woman who began her career in a local community after growing up as a city girl. Her experience covers her 34 year career and and the role of mentorship in her career success. Madam Chia is the author of a Book - With Amazon called 'Crossing Big cultural Boundary - Achieve success in cross cultural Marriage' Best selling author for parenting & Relationships. CHALLENGES FACED: Madam Chia faced several challenges on the job including her physical frailty to engage with locals in the community where she was teaching. As a wife of a Minister, she also struggled to keep up with family, Ministry and career responsibilities. Also being of a Chinese origin, she worked extra hard to fit in amongst the locals of the community where she found herself as a wife and Minister. INTERVIEW SUMMARY: Madam Chia explained that her Senior colleague identified the potentials in her and decided to mentor her. This mentorship helped her tremendously as she was exposed to so many trainings and opportunities that prepared her for bigger task ahead. Her mentor also helped her to align her job and passion in the right direction as the early part of her career was filled with mistakes and uncertainties. She emphasized on the need to believe in your Mentor especially if your mentor is a visionary person. In her situation, her mentor proposed tough trainings which she felt uncomfortable with at that time but she knew and was convinced that her mentor had her good interest at heart so she willingly obeyed his instructions. Mentorship is a relationship and both the Mentor and Mentee must be willing to do all it takes to maintain this relationship to maximize its benefits. This program explores all the benefits of a Mentor/Mentee relationship to enable those who are struggling with career or personal life, seek a mentor to guide them.
