The Merciful

The Beatitudes challenges us to examine how to be merciful people in a world obsessed with keeping score. Jesus promises that the merciful will be shown mercy, but with a crucial caveat: we must first be merciful to others. This isn't the natural order we expect. The challenge becomes deeply personal when we realize that our own forgiveness is directly tied to our willingness to forgive others. This isn't just a nice suggestion; it's a spiritual law that Jesus makes explicit: if we don't forgive others, our Father won't forgive us.
