Before the reforms of the Council of Trent, the Catholic priesthood was markedly different in its day to day expressions. While all modern Catholics would recognize what took place at a medieval liturgy, few would walk away not scandalized by the lives many priest and religious lead outside the Mass. Often times this was due more to circumstantial necessities than any commitment to sin, but nonetheless, it is jarring for many when they are first exposed to the truth.
