The mission of the Holy Spirit in the Church

On Wednesday the Seventh Week of Easter our Church invites us to first read and reflect on a passage from the first letter of the apostle John (5:1-12) entitled "Our faith is our victory over the world". Our treasure, which follows, is from the dogmatic constitution of the Church of the Second Vatican Council. Lumen gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, is one of the principal documents of the Second Vatican Council. This dogmatic constitution was promulgated by Pope Paul VI on 21 November 1964, following approval by the assembled bishops by a vote of 2,151 to 5. As is customary with significant Roman Catholic Church documents, it is known by its incipit, "Lumen gentium", Latin for 'Light of the Nations'. The document's purpose is to clarify the church's nature and mission, and to help humanity achieve unity in Christ. The document also describes the church as a communion of charity and highlights its complex reality of human and divine elements.  Our "treasure" today is taken from a section of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church entitled "The mission of the Holy Spirit in the Church" which teaches that after Christ completed His saving work, He sent the Holy Spirit to remain with the Church forever, giving it life, unity, holiness, and guidance. The Holy Spirit dwells within believers and within the Church as in a temple, helping Christians pray, leading them into truth, distributing spiritual gifts, and building up the Body of Christ through love. Through the Spirit's presence, the Church is continually renewed and guided toward full union with God, so that Christ's saving mission continues in the world until the end of time. In our first reading (John 5:1–12), John teaches that true faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God gives believers victory over the world—that is, over sin, fear, unbelief, and anything that separates people from God. This victory is not won by power or status, but by trusting in Christ, loving God, and obeying His commandments. John explains that God Himself testifies that Jesus is His Son and that eternal life is found only in Him. The central message is that those who believe in Jesus and live in God's love already share in the life and victory that come from God.
