How appropriate that today (in Toronto at least) we are experiencing rain on the day before April 21st, 2017, which will mark one year after Prince's death. However, on this occasion its a good time to reflect positively on his contribution to music. Now this is my tribute mix to Prince that I released for Prince’s posthumous birthday last year, just a month after his death. Most of the ground work came from a tribute party I did following his death and then I worked on it over and over and the result was THIS: A 3 HOUR, 2 PART MONSTER… My approach was a little different then most Prince mixes, being that its not just the hits, the B-sides, his production and songs he has written, but i wanted to include some of the songs he has been known to cover live (e.g. Radioheads - “Creep", Cars - "Let's Go"), his influences (e.g. James Brown, Jimi Hendrix) and some of the artists he has no doubt influenced (e.g. TLC, Justin Timberlake, Blood Orange). Also, being that it was 2016 I had to do a little mini tributes to Phife and Bowie and managed (i hope) to make that connection. But the overall result was something that was more or less influenced by Prince's later performances that were all open format, playing originals next to covers seamlessly. Hope you dig it.
