Her captivity involved highly unusual behavior, including shopping for shoes and sharing a bed with her captor, Lukasz Herba, who eventually released her at the British Consulate despite not receiving the full ransom he originally demanded. While the Herba brothers were eventually convicted and imprisoned for the crime, the case remains shrouded in controversy as many suspect it was a staged publicity stunt, though Ayling was never legally charged and subsequently achieved significant media fame.
