The Monastery Chapter 8

In which Father Eustace, riding through an autumnal valley, arrives at the Tower of Glendearg to visit the Lady of Avenel and becomes entangled in a peculiarly mysterious incident involving a returned forbidden book and the spectral appearance of a White Woman. His pious reflections are interrupted by the lady's death, which fills him with deep remorse and zeal, while Dame Glendinning attends faithfully to both her grief and the duties of hospitality.
