The Monster’s Not Real: An Unseen Predator Hunts Filmmakers in South Africa

Something is crushing the wildlife around a remote South African film camp. Gwen Faulkner and Sarah Mathis came to document big cats; now even the lions are prey. Charles Campbell’s “The Monster’s Not Real” strands the filmmakers between mutilated animals, a violent storm and a predator that does not fit anything their cameras have recorded before. As strange sounds circle their shelter, disbelief offers little protection. This science-fiction creature horror story puts an intimate relationship under pressure in a wilderness where familiar predators are suddenly the least of their worries.
