The Moon and His Wives

from Mythological Africans Podcast · host Mythological Africans

I have had the most amazing time over the last six weeks sharing about the women credited with founding some of the African continent’s peoples. I especially enjoyed last week’s episode about Tenemba who I’d never met before! We wrap up the discussion today with one more story: the extraordinary Wahungwe Creation Myth. Why extraordinary? Well, first, there’s the fact of the male moon. This, as it turns out, is not an uncommon occurence on the African continent and elsewhere in the world. There’s also the fact that the myth, in some ways, basically flips the story of Eve and Lilith on its head with some interesting outcomes. It is also the foundation legend of the ancient city of Great Zimbabwe. I also talk a bit about the upcoming book: “Foremothers: 500 Years of Heroines from the African Diaspora” by Kovie Biakolo. There’s no preorder link yet that I can find but I’ll certainly by sharing when it is available!Meanwhile…You already know “The Watkins Book of African Folklore” or the “Mythological Africans Book”, is now available for preorder!
