The Morning Pages

from The Daily Grateful with Michael Crose · host Michael Crose

A key practice from The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron, involves writing three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness thoughts every morning. It's a tool to clear the mind of clutter, unlock creativity, and remove internal blocks. The writing is private and unedited, serving as a daily ritual to overcome self-doubt, vent emotions, and tap into deeper creative potential through consistent self-reflection

You know how I tell you I pick up any things from big presentations, and then I roll with those things I remember seeing a very long video by Jack Conte who is a YouTube person who with his wife Have a band called pompamoos, and then they also created Patreon so that they could get paid for their art and that is now a major company with you know a bunch of employees and A big staff and a building and millions of anyway In this video he was talking about the internet and how everything has changed and not so much for the good But he said one thing just one little thing that stuck with me and it stuck with me like really really big and that was Create beautiful things. Yeah, just create beautiful things Ah So that's what I'm out to do that's how I intend to spend the rest of my life creating beautiful things and with that I was recommended a book and I got the book it came from amazon.com You just heard me move it past my microphone. It's called the artist way a spiritual path to higher creativity by Julia Julia Cameron It's 30 years old the book is 30 years old and I've been working my way through it And I have to tell you I am not terribly impressed Let's talk a little bit but but but As I I'm halfway through the book and I'm about ready to stop reading because I found something at the very beginning of the book One tiny little thing that has had me reread it like several times Should should I do that now just that one little tiny thing, you know She goes into a lot of stuff that is just same old same old as far as I'm concerned But in the chapter the basic tools She talks about something it's a ritual. I guess called the morning pages in order to retrieve your creativity.

You need to find it Yeah, that makes sense. I like that. That's good. I ask you to do this Let me put my readers on because I'm getting so damn old.

Okay, you will You to do this by an apparently pointless process I call it the morning pages. You will do the pages daily through all of the weeks of this course and I hope for much longer I have been doing them for a decade now and I have students who have worked with them for nearly as long And then there's some testimonials about the morning. So what are the morning pages? Oh, let's look into that Simply put the morning pages as I turn the page are three pages of longhand writing strictly streamed of consciousness Oh, god another morning.

I have nothing to say I need to watch the curtains You know something? I've never watched curtains. But anyway getting back to this. I need to get the laundry yesterday blah blah blah blah They may also be a more gloriously called brain drain Once you get this is part of your functions.

There is no wrong way to do the morning pages But what do you get out of it? What do you get? Well according to the book and according to somebody I know Who recommended the book who does the morning pages every morning? It starts out rough.

Well number one Here's my problem three handwritten pages and I use yellow pads And will I be able to read my own handwriting? Probably yes, could anybody else probably not But as you start writing down the mundane crap that just comes into your brain. You don't plan what you're writing You just sit your ass down every morning and you write three pages I got a whole pile right over there of yellow pads So I I'm ready to do this and as you move along through this process of everyday writing out three pages in longhand not doing it on the Computer we're doing it longhand in your own handwriting Eventually you're going to find creativity And once you find creativity coming out of all the bullshit that's roaming around your life your life gets Marketally better of the whole book, you know, it's a big book. It's it's a best-seller It's sold like a gazillion This is the only thing that appears to make sense and I guess I'm going to give it a shot You know because that's you know, what are my long-term goals at my age?

You don't have long-term goals Okay, I'm just telling you I ran into it on a phone. I talked to the guy that I've known for years. I've not seen him in 30 some years Help probably close to 40 years, but a very successful investment guy lives in Sarasota And he just said, you know in our conversation we talked about mutual people that we knew and He said no, I we don't make long-term goals at the stage of our lives We make important goals that work for every day and that made sense to me too So this makes sense to me as well. So I want to let you know how I'm doing with that Okay, because I need to be gratitude, you know, I need to have gratitude with this I need to be grateful for all these imperfections and I'm going to write down all the crap I'm going to write down all of the You know, I again, you don't plan what you're going to write.

You just sit your ass down and write and things are going to be interesting Because my goal is to spread joy. My goal is to create beautiful things every stinking day I want to create something beautiful every day. I'm not an artist I can't draw but I can talk and I can write so I'm just going to do this Three-page brain dump, I guess every day and I'll let you know how it's going What about you? I mean here.

I got this whole book paid a bunch of money for it wasn't she book I think most of the book is Dolan, unexciting and you know, you see, let's go through some of the chapters Recovering from a sense of safety, recovering a sense of identity, recovering a sense of power, recovering a sense of integrity Recovering a sense of possibilities. All right. Yeah, that's nice But there's one little thing that I pulled out of here. I think I'm gonna run with that one tiny little thing And uh stick the book on the shelf where all my other books are.

I need a bigger shelf. All right, you guys have a great day
