I stepped off the Greyhound at a truck stop in the middle of nowhere, somewhere west of the Pecos River. The air smelled like diesel and dust. I was the only one who got off. The man at the counter looked at me and said, 'You sure you want to go to Calico?' I didn't ask questions. I just nodded and walked out into the dark. But the girl I met there, the one in the diner with the blue eyes and the too-long fingernails—she knew something.
