A restless Greyhound driver makes an unscheduled stop at a run-down motel in rural Nevada—the Pine Cone Motor Lodge, Mile 47 on an unmarked highway. It's 3:47 AM in October 2017. A woman in a pink bathrobe stands alone at the ice machine, watching him. The driver, a man named Frank, tells me this story later, his hands shaking over coffee at a truck stop. He stopped because a girl—maybe fifteen—was standing at the gate, waving him down, asking for help. But when he pulled over, the girl was gone, and the woman in the bathrobe was already there, smiling, her mouth not quite opening right.
