Hope’s fingers wrapped around Charity’s neck, her thumbs pressing hard on her trachea. Charity had just slipped from consciousness just behind the curtain in the dark stage of the variety theater Madame Mustache’s. The audience had breached the doors, slowly streaming in and taking their seats. The house a murmur of rumors of the murder that had taken place on that very stage the night before.
