Margaret Lawrence and Louis Bennison: Broadway, Love and Murder

In the summer of 1929, Margaret Lawrence was one of the best-known actresses on the American stage—a Broadway star, socialite, and widow whose life appeared filled with glamour and success. Then, on June 9, she was found shot to death inside her New York City apartment. Beside her was fellow actor Louis Bennison, a stage and silent-film performer who had built his career playing rugged Western heroes. Bennison was also dead from a gunshot wound. Authorities concluded that Bennison had murdered Margaret before turning the gun on himself. The two had been romantically involved, and contemporary accounts described the deaths as the violent end of a troubled relationship. Lawrence’s husband, actor Wallace Eddinger, had died only months earlier, leaving her widowed shortly before the tragedy. The crime made national headlines. Two recognizable stars of the stage were dead inside a Manhattan apartment, and the very man known for playing heroic cowboys had become the killer at the center of a real-life tragedy.
