Augustine remarked, “I am a mystery unto myself!” It can be a frustrating moment to recognize and realize that you don’t quite know yourself, or—even more painfully—to have the mask of the false self ripped from your face. No matter how frustrating or painful this experience can be, it can also be liberating. You can find freedom in the unmasking of the false self, the vulnerability and transparency that it brings. It is here in these moments that we follow Jesus along this journey towards the true self.
