Here we see a warning about and a description of the man of sin, including why protestants have traditionally understood this as referring to the Roman Catholic Papacy. This is to motivate God's people to steadfastly cling to the gospel, and actively encourage one another in anticipation of His eventual return and triumph over darkness.
