The Mystery of the Marie Celeste
from Suspense - Radio’s Outstanding Theater of Thrills · host OTR.FM Network
Originally Aired: June 8, 1953 Suspense #516, "The Mystery of the Marie Celeste," presents a dark psychological thriller wrapped around one of maritime history's most enduring enigmas. Sam Newcomb, a desperate fugitive fleeing New York after killing his lover Grace and two others, stows away aboard the brigantine Marie Celeste. Tormented by guilt and questioning his own sanity, he initially plans to confess his crimes to Captain Briggs, but everything changes when he meets the captain's wife, also named Grace. Her presence triggers something profound in Newcomb's fractured mind, as he begins to see himself as the captain and her as his own murdered sweetheart. As Newcomb joins the hostile crew in the forecastle, the stage is set for the catastrophic events that will leave the Marie Celeste sailing empty across the Atlantic. Van Heflin portrays the tortured Newcomb with chilling intensity, exploring whether madness or guilt will consume him first, and whether his presence aboard will somehow explain why every soul aboard this vessel will mysteriously vanish without a trace.
