The Nazi Program Before the Holocaust

They didn’t begin with gas chambers. They began with words. Before the Holocaust became industrialized mass murder, Nazi Germany launched a program known as Aktion T4—a secret campaign that targeted people with disabilities, mental illness, and those the regime labeled “life unworthy of life.” In this documentary, we examine how ordinary language became a weapon. Bureaucrats, doctors, and administrators transformed prejudice into paperwork, and paperwork into mass murder. Between 1939 and 1945, an estimated 200,000–350,000 people were murdered under the Nazi euthanasia program. Aktion T4 demonstrates how genocide does not begin with violence—it begins by changing how society talks about human beings. This documentary explores the historical evidence behind one of the Third Reich’s most important—and least understood—crimes.
