The correction made the false belief stronger, not weaker. The Nazis protected and expanded private corporate power, entering into explicit partnerships with industrialists like Krupp, IG Farben, and Thyssen who provided financing and manufacturing capacity for the regime in exchange for guaranteed profits and the elimination of their labor opposition.The first concentration camp was built at Dachau in March 1933. The first people sent there were communists and socialists.The Night of the Long Knives in June 1934 was Hitler personally ordering the murder of the socialist wing of his own party. Ernst Rohm and the SA leadership, who represented the genuinely working class and vaguely socialist elements of the Nazi movement, were executed. The message was explicit. The socialist rhetoric was over. It had served its purpose.This is not obscure history. This is documented in every serious scholarly account of the Nazi period ever published. It is taught in universities. It is available in any library.The conservatives making the socialist argument know this. The systematic dismantling of democratic institutions, free press, and independent judiciary.Every single one of those characteristics describes Nazi Germany precisely.Every single one of those characteristics appears on the far right of the political spectrum, not the left.Socialism is defined by collective ownership of the means of production, redistribution of wealth, empowerment of workers, and the elimination of private concentrated corporate power. It is the structural opposite of fascism on every axis that matters.The Nazis did not redistribute wealth. They concentrated it.The Nazis did not empower workers. They enslaved them.The Nazis did not eliminate corporate power. They partnered with it and used it to build a war machine.Calling the Nazis socialists is not just historically wrong. It is the precise inversion of the documented record.Why This Matters Right NowThe conservatives making this argument are not doing it out of genuine historical curiosity. They are doing it because the comparison between early Nazi Germany and the current American political moment is one they cannot afford to have land.The extreme nationalism. The scapegoating of immigrants. The cult of personality around a leader who demands absolute loyalty. The attacks on the press as enemies of the people. The glorification of political violence.
