The Ned Kelly Killer: Jonathan Stenberg

Got something to say to this podcast? Send a voicemail, and you might hear yourself on the next episode! In 2012, Edward Ned Kelly was shot and killed at his home in Broadwater, New South Wales. The man responsible was Jonathan Stenberg. After the murder, Stenberg went on the run — but what followed was anything but ordinary. While wanted for a brutal killing, Stenberg travelled through Queensland, where he auditioned for a role in the film Mystery Road. He was offered a part, then disappeared before filming began. His time on the run eventually ended in the Northern Territory, where he was located and arrested by the Tactical Response Group (TRG). In this episode of Territory Famous, we unpack the murder of Edward Ned Kelly, the violence of the crime, and the extraordinary movements of a man who managed to blend into everyday life — even auditioning for a major Australian film — while evading police. This is not a typical murder case. It’s a story that spans states, raises serious questions, and ends with one of the Territory’s most high-risk arrests.
