On June tenth, two thousand twenty-six, a derecho with winds near ninety miles an hour crossed the Midwest and knocked out power to more than half a million homes. The morning after, the hardware store became the town’s command post. Lars Olson watched the first man through the door buy a chainsaw chain for the widow two houses down, and saw the truth the outage map cannot show: a town’s real emergency system is the neighbor with the chainsaw, willing to spend a Saturday on a tree which is not his.
