After learning that thug Benny Stark has already been to Mrs. Gottler's rooming house and broken the landlady's arm trying to find Kathy's whereabouts, Johnny helps the injured woman wrap Christmas presents while gently questioning her. Mrs. Gottler reveals that she helped Kathy pack and flee in the middle of the night, though the frightened girl refused to say where she was going for the landlady's own safety. When Mrs. Gottler produces an old photograph, Johnny spots a crucial clue: the photographer's address in Brambury, Michigan, Kathy's hometown.Johnny travels to the remote lumber village in the snow-covered pine hills, hoping a scared girl would run home for Christmas. However, the tight-knit community proves fiercely protective of their own. Both the telephone operator and hotel proprietor give Johnny the runaround when he asks about Kathy O'Dare, refusing to provide any information about the local girl to this stranger from New York.
