The Night the Backup Drive Showed Me the Burned House on Old Hollow Road

August 2017. Two in the morning on Old Hollow Road, outside a town called Misenheimer. A friend of a friend named Cora asks me to recover photos from a melted laptop she pulled out of a house fire. The drive itself is fine, but inside the fire-damaged chassis I find a single file — a video recorded the night of the fire, from inside the house, by a camera that should have been destroyed. Cora says she doesn't remember filming it. She says she was alone that night. The video shows someone standing in the hallway behind her, not moving, just watching. She never looked back. I delete the file. The next day she calls to say she found it again in a folder she didn't create.
