It's the summer of 1998 in the town of Harwood, Missouri, and Luna is seventeen. She's spent every June night on the porch of her grandparents' farmhouse, listening to the cicadas and the distant chime of the First Methodist bell tower. But on the third Thursday, the bells ring at three in the morning — eleven chimes, then twelve, then thirteen, moving backward through the hours. Luna walks barefoot down the gravel road to see who's pulling the rope. The church door is unlocked. The rope is moving on its own.
