The Night the Elevator Opened on a Snowbound Town

Luna steps into the elevator at the Moultrie Hotel, presses the button for floor twelve, and instead of the hallway she remembers, the doors open onto a street of deep snow under a starless sky. A town called Stillwater, population forty-two, where every lamp is dark and every face at every window is watching the same spot. The snow hasn't fallen in weeks, but the drifts are up to the eaves. She walks the main street past the barbershop with its striped pole still turning, past the diner where the coffee urn is full and the pie is still warm, past the library where the card catalog has a drawer labeled 'Residents, Deceased' that nobody pulled. She meets a woman on the porch of the white house at the end of the road, a woman whose hands are folded in her lap and whose eyes are fixed on something Luna cannot see. The woman says 'You're early' and 'He isn't finished yet' and 'You can wait inside if you like' but Luna knows better than to cross a threshold she wasn't invited over.
