A woman checks into the Peachtree Motel off Route 9 in upstate New York, late October 2018. The room is clean, the sheets are stiff, and on the nightstand sits a child's jack-in-the-box—painted red and yellow, handle intact. When she turns the crank, it doesn't play the music she expects. It plays a melody she remembers from her own childhood, a song that never should have been inside that box. The clown doesn't pop up. Not at first.
