The Night the Ponies Came Through Town

In the fall of 2017, I spent a week in a small town in western Montana called Colburn. It was one of those places you pass through on the way to somewhere else, a single main street with a diner, a gas station, and a church that doubled as a community hall. I was there to hike the ridge trails, but on the second night, I got talking to an old rancher named Earl at the diner. He told me about the ponies. Three of them, grey and silent, that came down from the high pastures one night every few years. They walked through the streets at midnight, and anyone who saw them felt something shift in their chest. I didn't believe him. But on the night before I left, I woke to a sound like hooves on pavement, and I looked out my motel window.
