The Night the Rain Stopped on Sulphur Well Road

It was late October in the town of Marlow, Oklahoma, a place so small the gas station closes at nine. I was driving home from a funeral, taking Sulphur Well Road like I always did, when the rain just... stopped. Not tapered off. Not faded. Stopped, like someone turned off a faucet. The road ahead was bone-dry, but behind me the asphalt was still wet. My headlights caught something up ahead: a woman in a blue dress, standing at the edge of the gravel, not moving. She was last seen walking into the grass along that same stretch of road.
