In the winter of 1999, on a dead-end road outside Calvert, Ohio, there was a one-room schoolhouse that had been abandoned since 1962. I went there because my grandmother taught her first year in that building — 1958, the year before I was born. She never talked about it, not once, but when she died I found a class photo in her Bible with every child's face scratched out except one. A boy in the back row, fair-haired, smiling like he knew something. I drove out to Salt Creek on a January night, snow heavy and silent, to see what she had locked away. The schoolhouse was still there. The lights were on. And inside, someone was still teaching a lesson that had never ended.
