In the late autumn of 2019, Luna's car broke down outside the unincorporated town of Jericho, Nevada — a place not on any map she'd seen, a place that existed only as a cul-de-sac at the end of a crumbling asphalt road. The mechanic who fixed her radiator wore coveralls with a name patch that read 'Elias' and spoke in a voice like gravel sliding downhill. He told her about the job they'd all been waiting for: a state contract to finally pave the road in full, to connect Jericho to the grid. But before the asphalt trucks arrived, strange things started happening on the stretch between mile markers 12 and 14.
