This event brought together a panel of experts to discuss the recent parliamentary coup in Peru which led to the removal of President Martín Vizcarra. Speakers considered the legal and constitutional context of the parliamentary coup, the political economy and social context in which it has taken place, the different responses to the coup by civil society in Lima and beyond, and the implications of the coup for key issues, including education reform, the Constitutional Tribunal, and the planned presidential elections in April 2021. Speakers: Viviana Baraybar (Oxford) Viviana Baraybar is a DPhil candidate at the Department of Politics and International Relation at the University of Oxford, and a member of Nuffield College. She works on topics related to political wrongdoing. Mercedes Crisóstomo (UCL) Mercedes Crisóstomo is an anthropologist, and currently a PhD candidate at Institute of the Americas - University College London. Alonso Gurmendi (UCL) Alonso Gurmendi is Assistant Professor at the Universidad del Pacífico and PhD candidate at UCL Laws. Rafael Novella (UCL) Rafael is a labour and development economist, working as a Senior Research Fellow at UCL. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Essex.
