The Odyssey, Episode 1: The Boy Who Waited | Sleep Story

from Dream With Jacob · host Jacob Evans

Twenty years gone, and a house full of men who won't leave. This is the first episode of a new series here — reading Homer's Odyssey aloud, one evening at a time, the way it was always meant to be told: out loud, in the dark, to someone who's allowed to fall asleep before it ends. Episode 1 belongs to Telemachus, the son Odysseus never really got to know, and the house that stopped being his the moment his father's ship sailed for Troy. If you've ever waited on someone you love without knowing if they're coming back, I'd love to hear about it in the comments. 0:00 Intro 3:25 The Ache in Ithaca 11:15 Telemachus's Resolve 39:25 Pylos and Old Nestor 47:00 Sparta — Menelaus and Helen 1:10:10 Trouble Back in Ithaca 1:18:10 Odysseus on Calypso's Shore 1:22:10 Sleep Sounds This is the premiere episode of a new Dream With Jacob series adapting Homer's Odyssey as a bedtime sleep story, read from Samuel Butler's 1900 public-domain English translation (Roman god names swapped to their Greek originals — Zeus, Athena, Poseidon, Hermes). It's timed to the cultural wave around the 2026 Nolan film, but adapts only Homer's original text, never the film's script or scenes. Episode 1 compresses Books I-IV, the story of Telemachus, into one full episode before the series turns to Odysseus's own adventures beginning in Episode 2. It's told gently, as a slow-moving narrative to rest inside rather than a guided meditation with direct instruction, and was written for anyone who wants an old, real story read to them at the end of the day. What's covered in this episode: - Twenty years since Odysseus sailed for Troy, and his house on Ithaca overrun by suitors who want his wife, his wine, and his throne, while his son Telemachus sits among them, humiliated and waiting. - Athena, disguised as an old family friend, visits Telemachus in secret and tells him his father is alive, giving him the courage to call the suitors to account in a public assembly. - Telemachus's assembly speech, an eagle omen, and his secret voyage away from Ithaca to search for news of his father, against his mother's fear and the suitors' plotting. - Pylos, and old King Nestor, who fought beside Odysseus at Troy and still doesn't know if he's alive. - Sparta, and Menelaus and Helen, who recognize Telemachus by his resemblance to his father, and the story of the wooden horse and the shapeshifting sea-god Proteus, who reveals that Odysseus is alive, held captive by the nymph Calypso, weeping for home. - The episode closes exactly where Episode 2 begins: Odysseus alone on Calypso's shore, staring at a sea he cannot cross.
