They believed it contained hidden layers that exposed deep truths about the structure of reality and the human condition. We trace the tradition of esoteric myth interpretation from the Orphics, Pythagoreans and the Derveni Papyrus through Plato, Porphyry, Macrobius and Proclus, examining the possibility that Homer encoded a metaphysical account of the cosmos, incarnation and the soul’s struggle to return home. We also explore the provocative Platonic idea that Hades may not simply be somewhere we go after death, but the embodied world we are living in now. Along the way, we get into the Platonic Myth of Er, the Milky Way as a gathering place for souls, the waters of Lethe, divination, and Porphyry’s extraordinary interpretation of the Cave of the Nymphs and Odysseus wandering the sea as an image of the soul trying to find its way out of material existence. We also examine the Cyclops as a symbol of the soul blinded by material pleasure, anamnesis as the recovery of our forgotten divine identity, Odysseus’s twelve ordeals as a zodiacal journey, Proclus’s claim that Homer preserved instructions for soul ascent, and Odysseus casting off his rags as an image of the soul stripping away its material garments and finally returning "home."
