The Offense of Conviction

Gen X watched the religious right overreach in the 80s and 90s and made a reasonable decision to be different. We rejected loudness, moral performance, and the kind of Christianity that imposed itself uninvited. But this episode asks honestly about the overcorrection — the place where "I don't want to be preachy" became "I don't want to be visible," and where avoiding the bad version of faith led to hiding the real version of it.Matthew 5:10 closes the Beatitudes with a promise that is uncomfortable for any generation that prizes approval: blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness. Jesus is careful — he's not blessing persecution for being obnoxious or self-righteous. He's specifically blessing the friction that comes from genuinely living by God's standards in a world that runs by different ones. The episode draws the line between wisdom about when to speak and fear that keeps us perpetually silent, and asks where Gen X has been trading faithfulness for approval."Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:10, NIV) Today's challenge: honestly assess whether there's an area where you've gone quiet about your faith to avoid friction — decide if it's wisdom or fear — and if it's fear, make one small move toward being visible as someone who actually believes what they say they believe.
