The Office of Deacon

from Pastor Steve Miller · host Steve Miller

In 1 Timothy 3:8–13, Paul makes clear that those who serve in the office of deacon must be qualified. Deacons are called to be dignified, sincere, self-controlled, faithful, and tested because serving Christ’s church is never merely about completing a task. It is about representing the Savior we belong to.Christian service is shaped by Jesus Himself. Christ did not come to be served, but to serve, and He gave His life as a ransom for many. He humbled Himself, took the form of a servant, and went willingly to the cross for sinners. Because Jesus served us at the greatest possible cost, no act of service done for His glory is beneath us.That means serving Christ can look like teaching, encouraging, caring for people, setting up a room, cleaning a floor, taking out the trash, or even plunging a toilet with joy. The task may seem small, hidden, or uncomfortable, but when it is done faithfully unto the Lord, it becomes an act of worship. We do not serve to earn Christ’s favor. We serve because Christ has already given Himself for us. The gospel turns ordinary work into joyful service because ultimately, we are serving Jesus. As you watch, consider:• Do I view service as a privilege or an inconvenience?• Am I willing to serve when no one sees or applauds?• Can I do even the least desirable task with joy because I am serving Christ?• Does my character match the gospel I profess?• Am I becoming the kind of faithful, humble servant Christ can entrust with greater responsibility?📖 Scripture References: 1 Timothy 3:8–13, Mark 10:45, Philippians 2:5–8Big Idea – Those who serve in the office of deacon must be qualified.⸻📌 Start at the beginning of our study through 1 Timothy.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSmVaQpkRhg🎥 Missed last week’s message?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T4Zox_ZOvI⸻ABOUT HERITAGEWe exist to glorify God by making, maturing, and multiplying disciples through His power and for His glory.https://heritageva.church/our-mission⸻PLAN A VISITNew to Heritage?
