In which the single gentleman’s arrival at the inn attracts a curious crowd, but he remains solitary and intent, sparring with the grotesque Mr Quilp who lurks with cunning and ill-will. Meanwhile, the impertinent dwarf persistently torments Kit’s mother, provoking young Kit to stand firm in her defence despite the sinister nature of Quilp’s presence.
