In which the mischievous Mr Quilp discovers that he is believed to be drowned and relishes the opportunity to overhear the mournful gathering of his wife, mother-in-law, and others making arrangements in his supposed absence. With a cunning spirit and sardonic humour, he disrupts their sombre proceedings and asserts his unexpected presence with a darkly comic flourish.
