The Old Curiosity Shop Chapter 5

In which we are introduced to the singular character of Mr Quilp, a diminutive and malicious gentleman, who displays a curious mixture of cruelty and cunning in his domestic interactions and his dealings at the wharf. His night of wakefulness, tyrannical behaviour upon his family, and comical violence toward a boy create an atmosphere both unsettling and grotesquely amusing, setting the stage for the peculiar incidents that attend his presence.
