The Once-for-All Sacrifice Made Present at Mass (The Patrick Madrid Show)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

Is the Mass a new sacrifice each time it is offered? Or is it the same sacrifice that was offered on Calvary? On The Patrick Madrid Show, Patrick Madrid answered this question with clarity: Jesus is not sacrificed over and over again. The Catholic Church teaches that Christ was sacrificed “once for all” on Calvary. What happens at Mass is not a second sacrifice, but our mysterious participation in that one eternal offering. Patrick pointed to the Letter to the Hebrews, which makes clear that Christ’s sacrifice is complete. At Mass, however, we are drawn into that same saving act through God’s grace. Just as the bread and wine truly become the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus, so too the faithful are brought into the reality of the Last Supper, Calvary, and even the heavenly sanctuary. That is why the Mass is so much more than a remembrance. It is a real sharing in the sacrifice of Christ, who remains both priest and victim. His priesthood does not pass away, and His offering before the Father is eternally present. At every Mass, we are given the privilege of entering into that mystery. Patrick also explained that each Mass is unique in its circumstances. A particular priest offers it for a particular intention, with a particular congregation present. Yet that uniqueness does not make it a different sacrifice. It is always the one sacrifice of Jesus Christ, made present sacramentally for us. For Catholics, this truth should deepen our awe, gratitude, and devotion at Mass. We are not watching from a distance. By God’s mercy, we are invited into the heart of the saving mystery itself.
