from The Evident Conspiracy Files · host ECF Studios

Send us Fan Mail CONTENT NOTE: This episode concerns the 1996 murders of Julie Williams and Lollie Winans, and the history of violence and fear faced by LGB people. It is told with respect for the victims and their families and centres the documented record. The crime is discussed but not depicted graphically. Themes include homophobia, murder, and grief. A lesbian couple, murdered in a national park. A hate-crime fear that gripped the LGB community. A wrongly accused man. And a 28-year wait for the truth. In the spring of 1996, Julie Williams and Lollie Winans — two experienced, gifted outdoorswomen, and partners in love — walked into Shenandoah National Park and never walked out. When word spread that a lesbian couple had been found murdered, a wave of fear moved through the gay and lesbian community and through women who venture into the wild: the fear that they had been hunted, targeted for who they were. And that fear was not paranoia. It was earned, in an era of real and often lethal anti-LGB violence. Tonight is a different kind of episode — a memorial, not a romp. Mark and Grim tell it with care: the lives, not just the ending. The investigation that took a wrong turn and stayed on it for years — the public hate-crime prosecution of a man the DNA later cleared. The cold decades. And the 2024 breakthrough that finally named a killer, 28 years too late for anyone to face a courtroom. It's also the most ECF lesson we've ever landed on: the official story, the satisfying story, and the true story are not always the same — and the more you want one to be true, the harder you have to look. Follow the evidence, even when it leads away from the story you wanted. To Julie and Lollie, and to everyone who ever felt that fear in their own chest: you were seen, and you always deserved to come home. From the shadows. Stay curious, stay sceptical, and look after each other out there. And we will catch you again, somewhere in time. 🎧 The Evident Conspiracy Files · TheECF.co.uk · Follow us on X Support the show Our new show - GRIM STORIES - is now available... https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/grim-stories/id6794635228
