The only BBC in da village

For my first-ever phone call, I dial up my amazing friend Tony Ward, who lives in Mexico. Tony’s family moved from Hong Kong to the UK,  he shares hilarious tales about his fierce 5’2” mum, who ran their Chinese restaurant like a lady-boss (don't ever mess with Mama Ward!). He shares the emotional yet humorous story of his "coming out" journey, including his mother's attempt to "convert" him with a trip to Thailand—a memory he can now laugh about in hindsight. He also reflects on how having a strong mother shaped him but left him struggling to express his emotions openly. As a mum myself, this conversation was eye-opening, filled with valuable insights and lessons. We also look back on our drum and bass days—Tony is partly to blame for my dodgy knees after countless late-night dance marathons.
